  2. Introduction of Amundsen • Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen • Born July,1872 in Norway • Family of boat owners and captains • 4th son in family, Schooled to become a doctor

  3. Major Accomplishments First expedition through the Northwest Passage. First person to reach the South Pole First person to explorer both the North Pole and South Pole First person to fly over North Pole Amundsen’s explorations of both polar regions opened up parts of the world that never before been successfully explored.

Northwest Passage • Route through/above North America. • Explorers as early as the 1700’s attempted to find route. • Sea route needed to be discovered • Amundsen’s Trip 1903-1906 • He and 6 crew members on journey • Sat in frozen oceans often • August, 1905 observed ship sailing towards them from the west.

  5. Amundsen’s Journey • Amundsen’s Trip 1903-1906 • Ship reached Nome, Alaska in 1906. • Very shallow waters, not good route for large ships. • "The North West Passage was done. My boyhood dream - at that moment it was accomplished. A strange feeling welled up in my throat; I was somewhat over-strained and worn - it was weakness in me - but I felt tears in my eyes. 'Vessel in sight' ... Vessel in sight."

  6. Ship for Trip • Gjøa • Built in 1872 • 70 feet long • 48 tons • 13 horsepower single-screw marine paraffin motor • Ship was very shallow to help in its navigation. • Small, meaning much smaller crew.

  9. Race to the Pole Amundsen and Robert Falcon Scott were racing to reach the pole "BEG TO INFORM YOU FRAM PROCEEDING ANTARCTIC -- AMUNDSEN". Two different routes taken Amundsen’s use of sled dogs was large part of his success Scott arrived at the pole some 35 days after Amundsen Scott’s entire crew died on trip

  10. Death • June 18, 1928 • Aboard Latham 47 flying boat • On a rescue flight to find missing members of a crew • Plane went missing and was he never found
