  6. Root Password Recovery • Step One: Boot from removable media such as a floppy with tomsrtbt installed • Step Two: Mount the partition • This would be the partition with /etc • With the following command: mount –t ext2 /dev/hda5 /mnt (Note: you must be sure of the fstype)

Root Password Recovery • Step Three: Edit the password-file • First determine the file you want to edit with your favorite editor -- vi • Normally this would be /etc/shadow • Look for the line that starts with root (normally the 1st line) root:fX2SDLhg4OvDU:11803:0:99999:7::: • The fields are separated by “ : “ and the password is the 2nd field

  8. Root Password Recovery • Delete the password so the line now looks like this: root::11803:0:99999:7::: • Then save the file and exit the editor • Step Four: Unmount the partition • Step Five: Reboot without the floppy and login as root without a password • Step Six: Set the root password

  9. Class Exercise • First Make a backup copy of passwd and shadow before booting with the floppy su – cp /etc/passwd /root cp /etc/shadow /root
