  8. There are 4 different layers of the tropical rainforest, • Emergent • Canopy • Understory • Floor

  9. Emergent layer • Contains small number of large trees called emergents • Grow above canopy • Eagles, butterflies, and bats live in this area

  10. Canopy layer • Majority of trees • A quarter of all insects live here • 50% of plants are believed to live here

  11. Understory layer • Lies between canopy and forest floor • Leaves are much larger at this level • Only 5% of light reaches the understory • Also called the “shrub layer”
