  1. 3.10 Development of the Zygote (Sec 3.4 pg 88)

  2. Organisms develop and protect their embryos in different ways.

  3. Seeds: • Used by plants. • Contains the embryo and stored food. • Develop inside the ovary, the ripened ovary is the fruit.

  4. Anatomy of a Seed: • Epicotyl will become the stem and leaves. • Hypocotyl (dicots only) the part that pushes up through the soil. • Radicle will develop into the roots. • Cotyledon will develop into leaves but contains food in the form of starch and sugar for the embryo in the meantime. • Dicotyledons = 2 embryo leaves, Monocotyledons = 1 embryo leaf. MONOCOT DICOT

  5. Eggs • Contains the embryo, nutrients, some protection. • Many types: • Thousands of embryos in an egg sac, like a tapeworm • Soft shelled eggs with one embryo each, like a turtle. • Hard shelled eggs with one embryo each, like birds. • Mammals that lay eggs are called monotremes.

  6. Internal development • Marsupials – Young are born tiny and immature then are placed in a pouch to develop further and to nurse. • Placental – Embryos are surrounded by a placenta that connects the baby to mother by the umbilical cord.
