The Problem • People smoke about anywhere on campus (except for the buildings) • Causes unpleasant atmosphere • Students who are not smoking have to breath in others smoke as they come out of buildings • The smokers frequently throw their cigarette buts and boxes on the ground making the campus uglier

  3. Actions • Survey the NJIT student body to get a better idea of what the students think of the current smoking situation • Interview a staff member interested in the problem • Interview a student who has been influential in the push for solving the current smoking situation • Research the current rules for smoking on campus

Survey • In October 2012 the Student Senate conducted a survey of 634 NJIT students • The survey asked students what their opinion on the current smoking situation on campus was • Results: • Content with current situation: 184 students • Want a smoke free campus: 194 • Want designated smoking areas: 256

Interview: Dr. Judy Washington • Dr. Judy Washington is on NJIT’s Health Services staff • Concerned more with the aesthetics of the campus • She frequently walks around the NJIT and Essex County College campuses • Essex County College is a smoke free campus • She has noticed that ECC’s atmosphere was much cleaner than NJIT’s because of the lack of smoking

Interview: Mohammed Adam • NJIT Freshman transfer student from Brookdale Community College • Contacted the Student Senate desiring to make NJIT a smoke free campus • At Brookdale he had been on the Student Life Board which had been influential in making the College campus smoke free • Mohammed was a former smoker who’s life had been heavily affected by the negative affects of smoking

Current State • Students are not allowed to smoke within 25 feet of any buildings • People smoking within 25 feet of buildings can only be asked to move away from the buildings (even police can only ask) • Cigarette receptacles are placed near buildings • Students frequently smoke directly beside the buildings

  11. Recommendations • Enforce the current 25 foot rule • Post signs informing people about the rule • Allow police to tell people to move away from the buildings • Move cigarette receptacles away from the buildings to be consistent • Hold seminars etc. to help people quit smoking
