  4. John Ortberg “A wife could be given into the hand of her husband or “without hand” which meant her father retained control of her…she was expected to renounce her fathers religion and worship at her husband’s altar.”

  5. Luke 11:27-28 27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.” 28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

  6. John 20:29 “blessed are those who have not seen me and yet still believe.”

  7. Luke 10:38-42 38  As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” 41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

  8. Luke 8:1-3 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women… : • Mary (called Magdalene) … • 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; • Susanna; and • many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

  15. Dorothy Sayers “I think I have never heard a sermon preached on the story of Martha and Mary that did not attempt, somehow to explain away its text. Mary’s, of course, was the better part- the Lord said so, and we must not precisely contradict him. But…Martha was doing a really feminine job, whereas Mary was just behaving like any other disciple, male or female; and that is a hard pill to swallow.

  16. Dorothy Sayers  Perhaps it is not wonder that the women were first at the Cradle and last at the Cross. They had never known a man like this Man- there never has been such another. A prophet a teacher who never nagged at them, never flattered or coaxed or patronized; who never made arch jokes about them; who never treated them either as ‘The women God help us!” or “the ladies, God bless them!”; who rebuked without [demeaning] and praised without condescension; who took their questions and arguments seriously; who never mapped out their sphere for them, never urged them to be feminine or jeered at them for being female; who had no axe to grind and no uneasy male dignity to defend””

  17. Jesus’ treatment of Women: • John 4 Woman caught in adultery

  18. Jesus’ treatment of Women: • John 4 Woman caught in adultery • Luke 7 Mary Magdalene

  19. Jesus’ treatment of Women: • John 4 Woman caught in adultery • Luke 7 Mary Magdalene • John 4 Samaritan Woman

  20. Galatians 3:26-29 26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

  21. Galatians 4:7  So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.
