  2. Sugar act Until 1763 taxes on colonial trade had been thought of as a way to control trade, not to raise money. The molasses act of 1733 had been past to limit the amount from parts of the West Indies isn’t under British control. That same year the British passed the Sugar Act of 1764, which taxed sugar.
