  4. 1. Background • The cluster of Macchada Thai silk was initiated by Mrs. ArtitthayaSirimucchadakul in 2010 but exactly developed in 2011. It is located in Pak Tong Chai district, 32 km (20 ml) south of Korat, which is a very well-known district for hand-woven Thai silk with good quality. It started initially with 20 members and now has 120 members (in 2012).

Objectives Macchada Thai silk factory was established for the objectives of: • Promoting and developing local silk; • Promoting members to get more income; • Becoming more powerful and competitive; • Creating jobs for local people; • Protecting Thai traditional weaving; and • Having appropriate system of producing silk.

Method The cluster of Macchada was developed in the following ways: • Creating trust among all SMEs • Started from asmaller to larger group • Collecting membership fee of 100 Baht • Setting up share and selling to the members with max. 20 shares only per each • Dividend is provided every the year-end • Setting rules and regulations

  7. 4. Structure The structure of Macchada cluster consists of: • President • Vice President • General Secretary • Secretary Assistant • Department of Human Resources • Department of Marketing • Technical & Engineering Department • R & D Department • Department of Accounting & Finance

  8. Korat Foods Cluster

  9. 1. Background • After the study of a university, Korat food cluster was established in 2006 with financial support from the Department of Industrial Promotion-Region 6 in the amounts of 1,000,000; 500,000; and 300,000 Bath for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year respectively.

  10. 2. Objectives Korat food cluster aims at: • Upgrading the product quality; • Buying raw materials at a cheaper price; • Promoting their accessibility to global market

Method Korat food cluster was developed after a thorough study of a university with support from Ministry of Industry through its provincial department of industry promotion in NakhonRachasimaand after up to 25 meetings of all relevant SMEs to sit, discuss, and build trust before developing the cluster and then selected the president. [The current president is the 3rd person.] However, not all SMEs join together to develop this cluster; they withdrew themselves for still mistrust while others for their own reasons.

  12. 4. Structure Currently there are are 20 company members in this cluster within the province. This cluster includes 20 upstream business firms like farm entrepreneurs, feeds store, and raw material for processing. It has also 30 registered middle stream business doing pork-processing manufac-turing, including Gunchiengjamem company whose owner is a cluster coordinator. There are also 30 downstream firms with the same type of business.
