  2. Fresh water ecosystem; • River is considered as a Fresh Water Ecosystem. • A fresh water ecosystem: • Is defined as an area which has a low salt concentration – usually less than 1%. • Includes; Lake , ponds, RIVERS, springs, streams and wet land. • Is contrasted by the marine ecosystem which have a larger salt content.

  3. A River • Is originated from snow melt mountains. • At its head water, the river is usually cold and full of oxygen and runs swiftly through a shallow riverbed. • As the river flows down a mountain, the river becomes warmer, wider and slower and decrease in oxygen.

  4. A river is also defined as a body of water that moves in one direction.

  5. As water moves down, it gets Warmer, wider, slower and decrease in oxygen.

  6. When a Runoff happens, it washes , the nutrients and sediments from the surrounding land into a river. As a result, these materials affect the growth and health of the organisms in the river.

  7. Life in the rivers

  8. Mosses They anchor themselves to rocks by using root like structures called rhizoids.

  9. Planktons They don’t live in headwaters because the current is too strong for them to float due to their size

  10. However, Downstream, they can float in the warmer, calmer water

  11. Trouts and minnows They are adapted to cold, oxygen rich headwaters.

  12. trouts They are powerful swimmers and have streamlined bodies that present little resistance to strong current

  13. Animals and plants

  14. fish Such as catfish and carp prefers to live in calmer waters.

  15. plants Like the crowfoot, set roots down in the river’s rich sediment.

  16. Plants also Like the arrowhead will vary in shape according to the strength of a river’s current

  17. Due to human misbehaves the rivers are in danger

  18. Rivers in danger • Industries use the river water in manufacturing processes and as receptacles for waste. • People use it as dispose of their sewage and garbage. • As a result, toxins spread and thus killed river organisms and made the fish inedible. • Runs offs from land puts pesticides and others poisons into rivers and coats the riverbeds with toxic sediements.

  19. How human polluted rivers? They discharge the waste directly into the river.

  20. They Throw every kind of waste.

  21. Thus, the aquatic life is destroyed And fish became inedible and full of disease.
