  5. Explore different roles • Do your own job well! • Observe your peers & ask questions • Set up a conversation to learn more

  6. Learn from mentors • Find someone your admire • Invite them to sit down for a chat • Ask about their career & current role!

  7. Educate yourself outside of work • Network with peers in other companies • Join a professional organization • Attend meet ups and tech talks • Read!! Books, blogs, Quora, tweets…

  8. Phase II What’s my goal and how can I show results?

  9. Define your goal • Choose an interest based on your research • Set a realistic timeline • Share your goal with those who can help and support you

  10. Meet your manager’s expectations • Be transparent about your goals • Don’t assume; ask & clarify • Help your manager meet his or her goals • Kick ass in your current role!

  11. Make your progress visible! • Share before anyone has to ask • Over communicate with frequent updates • Strive for results • Don’t undersell yourself but be honest

  12. Phase III Be Real with Yourself!

  13. Ask for what you want • Say what you want – no one can read your mind! • Find the right people & ask for help – don’t be shy, speak up! • Work hardand earn what you’re asking for

  14. Maintain the right attitude • Prove your value & potential for growth • Don’t give up! • Be grateful to the people who help you along the way

  15. Know your backup plan • It is possible that things won’t work out • What will you do if the answer is “no”? • Examine your priorities ahead of time

  16. Put together a strategy, then execute! • What do I want? • Explore different roles • Learn from mentors • Educate yourself outside of work • What’s my plan? • Define a goal • Meet expectations • Share your progress • Be real! • Ask for what you want • Be positive • Know your Plan B

  17. Remember… • Work hard and work smart • No one else is going to manage your career for you • You don’t need all the answers now – just the next one! • Over communicate: ask questions, share progress
