Introduction to Social Media • What is Social Media? • Put simply, social media is digital media used to communicate and share information electronically • Why is it important? • Social media is a tool that helps you stay relevant and informed • It can be used as an effective strategy for individuals and organizations to achieve their objectives-it is fast, easy and in most cases free to create and share content “David Sacks, CEO of Yammer: ‘‘Information is power used to mean that hoarding information gave you power: Now we’re seeing that sharing information is power: The more you can share, the more you can help other people – and the more it becomes apparent you're an expert and a valuable employee.”

  5. Introduction to Social Media • Why is it terrifying? • Crammed • Solution: focus on the top 3 sources you find useful, feel free to reach out to us for recommendations. • Overwhelming • Solution: ask for help! • The etiquette isn’t clearly defined • Solution: stay on the safe side and check security settings. If you’re unsure about something being appropriate, simply don’t do it. Browse your settings or ask for help to double check that content is contained. • Always evolving • Solution: ask social media experts for updates. Just using these tools regularly will keep you up to date. • Horror stories • Solution: use these as reminders of what not to do, use your best judgment and if anything feels uncomfortable, again refer back to etiquette.
