  2. Process Standard: Representations • “The term model has many different meanings. So it is not surprising that the word is used in many different ways in discussions about mathematics education. For example, model is used to refer to physical materials with which students work in school—manipulative models.” • What models do you use in your classroom????

POLYDRONS • PLAY TIME • Allow students to play with the POLYDRONS the first time you use this manipulative. • YOUR TASK • TASK 1: MAKE SOMETHING! \. • TASK 2: Solve the Logi-Solids puzzles. • TASK 3: If time, use the Polydron pieces to complete the NCTM Illuminations activity. • TASK 3: If time, make the five Platonic solids with your Polydron pieces.

  5. Reflection • Complete the Polydron Reflection sheet. • 2 minutes!

  7. Process Standards “cont.” • Discuss in your groups what you learned about the NCTM Process standards. • Share your biggest “Ah-ha” • Choose a reporter from your group. The reporter will report the best comments and ideas from your group. • You will have 5 minutes!

  10. Tennessee Process Standards • The TN Process Standards (CLEs) are the same for Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. • The Checks for Understanding and SPIs are different in these three courses. • Read the TN Process Standards carefully! • 5 minutes!

  12. TN Process Standards vs. NCTM Process Standards • Match TN to NCTM on paper in your small group. • Example: • Read CLE 3103.1.1 • Does it fall under the NCTM Communications process standard? NCTM Problem Solving process standard? And so on…….. • A TN process standard may fall under more than one NCTM process standard! • As a group complete the 2nd column of your chart. Individually, complete the Comfort Level column.

VISUAL AID • NEW GROUPS!!!! • We will split up into seven (7) groups! • Each group will be given a TN process standard. • Write the TN Process Standards number and standard on a poster. • List the NCTM process standards that your group feels align with the TN process standards. • BE CREATIVE! • 15 minutes!

  16. New Tennessee Process Standards: My Comfort Level • ON YOUR OWN…. • Honestly, How often do you use these TN process standards in your classroom? • How do you use them? • Complete the chart on page 55 of your notebook at this time. • 5 MINUTES

Back to the Standards • Earlier, your group was assigned a TN process standard. • BRAINSTORM TIME! • Come up with 3 – 4 strategies and/or activities that could be used with your group’s process standard (ONE PER SUBJECT). • ADD THESE STRATEGIES AND/OR ACTIVITIES to your POSTER! • Be prepared to share the best one • Be prepared to turn in all • If time, complete a lesson plan handout!

TN Process Standards “cont.” • Questions/comments? • HW assignments • Read the new TN standards tonight! • Look at the User’s Guide • – If time, take your “best practice” lessons and match them to the proper content standard(s) – include appropriate CLE//spi. • - By Thursday have your “best lesson” ready to turn in as well as the one with which you are the least comfortable.
