  2. Select at least 3 of these; each table should cover all of them: • Copper-plated ornament • Crystal-growing ornament • Rock candy • Poinsettia paper

Copper-plating ornament Obtain a small piece of thin steel (iron) Cover with masking tape and cut out shape Place in HCl soln to remove surface coating Rinse/blot dry Use eraser to clean exposed area Paint on acidified Cu2+ soln Rinse Pat dry, spray with top coat (optional) Poinsettia Paper Crush a small piece of poinsettia leaf (red) in warm/hot water in large test tube (approx 2 mL water Let steep for 15 minutes Use pipet to place on filter paper Dry in lab drawer Basic How To’s

  4. Crystal Ornament Boil enough water to cover your ornament (pipe cleaner) Stop heating. Add Borax and stir Continue to add borax until it no longer dissolves (approx. ¼ cup borax per 1 cup water) Transfer to clean cup Dangle a shaped pipe cleaner in soln. Label and place in safe, undisturbed location overnight. Rock Candy Boil water (75-100 mL/serving) Slowly add 2 times the volume sugar as water until dissolved Heat for 4-5 more minutes Wait for boiling to stop. Pour in clean container/additives Cool 10 minutes Dangle stick/string moistened and coated with sugar granules in syrup Cover with paper towel/lid Do not disturb until crystals reach desired size (1 wk possibly) Basic How To’s
