  3. Incoming freshmen -- one of five annual surveys The college freshman survey covers a broad range of questions, lets focus on two of them …

  4. Question 1: during the last year How often have you used an online instructional website (e.g., Khan Academy, Coursera) as assigned for a class? How often have you used an online instructional website (e.g., Khan Academy, Coursera) to learn something on your own? Never Occasionally (at least once) Frequently Answer these questions before continuing.

  5. National survey results Analyzing these results, what do you notice? (You can see what I noticed here, but no peeking till you answer for yourself).

  6. Why I told you about that question Education is an important Internet application. You can take responsibility for your education.

  7. II. How often did you do each of the following during the last year? Ask questions in class Support your opinions with a logical argument Seek solutions to problems and explain them to others Revise your papers to improve your writing Evaluate the quality or reliability of information you received Take a risk because you feel you have more to gain Seek alternative solutions to a problem Look up scientific research articles and resources Explore topics on your own, even though it was not required for a class Accept mistakes as part of the learning process Seek feedback on your academic work Work with other students on group projects Integrate skills and knowledge from different sources and experiences (a. never, b. occasionally, c. frequently) Answer these questions before continuing . (Online form)

  8. Why I told you about that question • Those learning behaviors correlate with use of online educational sites like the Khan Academy and Coursera. • More important, they “correlate with academic success, forming the foundation for lifelong learning.” Do you want to do well in school?

  9. A modest participation goal for this class Ask at least one dumb question. Give at least one wrong answer to a question I ask. If everything you say in class is correct, you are not taking enough risks.

  10. Some other UCLA survey results – check them out …
