1. R&D & TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT: APPROACH & STRATEGY Setting up New R&D Models IGIB has been very successful in setting up new business models for conducting R&D in its focus areas of research. Some of the successfully adopted R&D models by the Institute are one of its kind and have never been adopted by any other research Institute in India. One of the main R&D models adopted by the Institute in the recent past is “Genomed” – The Knowledge alliance of IGIB - Nicolas Piramal. A brief description of the above mentioned model is as follows: Setting up New R&D Models: “GENOMED” The IGIB-NPIL- KNOWLEDGE ALLIANCE • Genomed is a Knowledge alliance one of its kind, forged for the first time between an industrial concern - Nicholas Piramal India Limited & a CSIR lab - Centre for Biochemical Technology (CBT) now IGIB, on 8-11-2000. It is based on a special model where knowledge is the commodity (product). In this model knowledge evaluation has been done and knowledge has been equated like EQUITY but in the form of IPR share for CBT/ IGIB. Some of the salient features of the alliance are: • This knowledge alliance is dedicated to the study and advancement of Genomics, Pharmacogenomics and Bioinformatics. • It is a first-of-its-kind alliance in India between a Government owned Institute and a pharmaceutical company. Novelty of Genomed: Genomed model has allowed knowledge generation and absorption by industry, while simultaneously using operating expenses of industrial partner, with very little capital investment from IGIB’s coffers. This is distinctly different from contractual research or technology transfer. The projects under Genomed are developed jointly using business driven R&D approach and are executed by Genomed scientists under the guidance of IGIB scientists and Director IGIB, who is the chairperson of the Scientific Advisory Board of Genomed.
