    2. Essential Questions What was the expectation of the founding fathers in the set up of our national government? What was their vision and how do the jobs of each branch prove this idea works?

    3. The Three Branches of Government

    4. The Executive Branch The Executive Branch of Government makes sure that the laws of the United States are obeyed. The President of the United States is the head of the Executive Branch of government. This branch is very large so the President gets help from the Vice President, department heads (Cabinet members), and heads of independent agencies.

    5. The Executive Branch Jobs of the President

    6. The Executive Branch is made up of: President: Leader of the country and commands the military. Vice President: President of the Senate and becomes President if the President can no longer do the job. Departments: Department heads advise the President on issues and help carry out policies. Independent Agencies: Help carry out policy or provide special services.

    7. The Judicial Branch The Judicial Branch of government is made up of the court system. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the country and includes 9 justices or judges. The Judicial Branch makes sure that laws match the Constitution. The Supreme Court sees that laws are fair. The Judicial Branch works in the Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C.

    8. The Legislative Branch The Legislative Branch of government is made up of the Congress and government agencies. The Constitution gives Congress the power to make laws. Congress has two parts, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Congress works in the Capital Building in Washington, D.C.

    10. Checks and Balances Our government works with checks and balances. This is a system that does not allow one branch to have all the power, but makes each branch answer to the other.

    13. Assignment: Work with a partner to categorize and classify the different jobs and meeting places of the 3 Branches of Government and answer the Essential Question.
