Europe Prior to WWII • 1934 – Hitler plans to Re-arm Germany • What is wrong with this? • Violates the Treaty of Versailles. • Italy, Benito Mussulini was building a large Military Force • March 1938: Hitler takes the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia and later the entire country
Start of the War • August 1939: Germany and Russia sign non-aggression pact • September 1939: Germany attacks Poland, making the official beginning of World War II • Why does this signify the beginning of WWII? • France and Britain were treaty-bound to come to the aid of Poland
Cash and Carry • Cash and Carry was established by Roosevelt as a revision to the Neutrality Acts • Allowed sale of material to other countries as long as the other country took care of transportation and paid immediately in cash • Cash and Carry left many European counties bankrupt so it had to be revised called the Lend-Lease Act
The U.S • President Roosevelt wanted to keep the U.S out of a European War • Roosevelt constructed a plan to send material aid to Britain without payment • This is called the Lend-Lease Act of 1941 • This ended U.S neutrality and German Submarines began sinking U.S Merchant Ships
Pearl Harbor • Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was home to the American Pacific Fleet in 1941 • December 7, 1941: Japan retaliated to U.S material trade with the allies by launching a surprise attack on the Pearl Harbor • The surprise attack threw the U.S into the War
