Strategy Considerations Recognizing the co-dependent nature of licensing and technical issue resolution, the project team is developing a Licensing Specification to further define project strategy and direction • Reconcile existing LWR requirements to HTGR features • Identify white papers and reports required in support of Early Site Permit (ESP) and Combined License (COL) applications • Establish Engineering and R&D interfaces in support of these NRC transmittals • Develop an NRC interface schedule for pre-application and ESP/COL application activities

Near term pre-application areas of focus for the NGNP Project include: Fission Product Transport – NGNP PIRT Fuel qualification program Accident analysis source term Containment/confinement & EPZ definition Establishment and implementation of a risk informed licensing approach Licensing Priorities

Process Overview NGNP Pre-application PeriodApplication Submittal & NRC Review NGNP Transmittals Partnership Pre-app ESP/LWA COL application & review Design certification for the commercial design is expected to occur after issuance of the initial COL The potential benefits of an ESP application are currently being evaluated

  6. First project public meeting with NRC held on Dec. 11, 2008 covering topics associated with the risk informed approach Project licensing documents (white papers) covering the priority topics will be developed and submitted to NRC for review and feedback NGNP is coordinating research activities with the NRC Staff Current Status

  7. Continue pre-application submittal development and NRC interaction on priority topics in order to maximize the benefits of the pre-application period Focused pre-application activities will promote a timely and efficient COLA review following submittal in 2013 Support gas-cooled reactor workshops and forums to facilitate common understanding and resolution of technical and licensing issues Next Steps
