  2. Warm-up • Journal: Full sentences for full credit • What is race? • Write about a memory/experience in which race seemed to matter. • Why and/or how did it matter?

  3. Reading & Journal • Reading excerpts from Guns, Germs and Steel prologue (Yali’s Question) • Journal: Full sentences for full credit • What is Yali’s question? • What does Yali mean by “cargo”? • Why does he mention race?

  4. Movie • Guns, Germs and Steel • Think about: • Interactions between different races? • Who is a have? Who is a have not? Why? • Is there a correlation between race and the haves/have nots?

  5. Reflection* • Journal: Full sentences for full credit • What was Yali’s question? • What is the author’s theory? • Who is a have? Who is a have not? Why? Is there a correlation between race and the haves/have nots?

  6. Homework* • Is your environment your destiny? Does your environment limit/control what you can do? • Think about current events and come up with at least three pieces of evidence to support your answer to the question. Be prepared to discuss this question and your evidence. (Influence of geography, human biology and/or race in producing the disparities between civilizations)

  7. Warm-up* • Journal: Full sentences for full credit • What movie are we watching? • What is Diamond’s theory? • Is there a correlation between race and wealth (of nations, countries, etc.)?

  8. Movie • Guns, Germs and Steel • Think about: • Interactions between different races? • Who is a have? Who is a have not? Why? • Is there a correlation between race and the haves/have nots?

  9. Movie Debrief • How does this movie interact with your thinking about race and wealth in the world? • Why/how does race matter? • Why/how does wealth matter?

  10. Reflection • Written reflection and then whole class discussion on the importance of people throughout history. • What voices have not been heard throughout history?

  11. Homework • Is your environment your destiny? (Influence of geography, human biology and/or race in producing the disparities between civilizations) • We will be having what is called a Socratic Seminar which means people discuss a topic as a student group with very limited teacher guidance
