  17. *PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) The radiance of a star guided the travelers to the feet of Jesus where they offered their most precious gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh.

  18. You have given us more than a star, O God, to guide us. You have revealed your glory and your love in the person of Jesus, the Light of the World.

  19. We recognize our responsibility to be bearer of his light and love into the areas of peoples’ lives darkened by pain and fear, poverty and oppression, sorrow and hopelessness.

  20. Yet we must confess there are too many times when we choose to go our own way rather than be guided by you – times when we are reluctant to allow the power and radiance of Christ to flow through us.

  21. Forgive us and strengthen us with your Spirit to follow wherever you lead us, and to reveal your glory and love through all we do and say. This we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

  22. ASSURANCEOF PARDON L: This is the message we have heard and proclaimed to you: God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. Sisters and Brothers, know that in the light of Christ you are forgiven.

  23. ASSURANCEOF PARDON P: Thanks be to God. Amen.

  30. In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we have observed his star at its rising, andhave come to payhim homage.’

  31. When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, ‘In Bethlehemof Judea; for so it hasbeen written bythe prophet:

  32. “And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means last among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel”.’ Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned fromthem the exact timewhen the star hadappeared.

  33. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, ‘Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.’ When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, aheadof them, went the star that they hadseen rising,

  34. until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paidhim homage. Then, opening theirtreasure-chests,

  35. they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. L: This is the Word of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God!
