  3. Pushed to open jobs and equal pay for women. Revival of feminism due to push of the Civil Rights Act ’64 AND establishment of N.O.W. ’66. 1961 Presidential Commission on Status of Women helped revive feminism. The Feminist Critique 1968 demonstration against the Miss America Pageant gained national attention. New methods of contraception, birth control pills also helped encourage this feminist trend.

  4. Equal Rights Amendment was proposed in 1972…”not denied on account of sex.” Title IX Educational Amendment to the Civil Rights Act 1972 Roe v. Wade – 1973 struck down laws prohibiting abortion. Women’s Rights and Public Policy Supreme court cited an earlier case of Griswold v. Connecticut where they ruled the14th Amendment Blocked states from inter- fering with right to end a Pregnancy. Why? Inflation/declining wages AND in-creased demand for “Women’s Jobs”. Largest change was increase in married women in workforce

  5. “Stonewall Rebellion”- 1969 New York City at the Stonewall Inn which led to the develop of a more assertive political force. New militancy was based partly on protest tactics used in the anti-war and civil rights movements. Coming Out Greatest issue had to do with treatment of gays in the military = Discharge San Francisco also grew as a center. Spread of the AIDS epidemic- - first identified 1981 - syndrome caused by HIV

  6. ex. 1975 = 56% said religion was “very important” compared to only 25% Europeans. U.S. population identifies itself with churches more so than any other industrialized nation. Mainline Protestant churches struggled after 1970. Churches in change Growth of televangelists Roman Catholic Church became more “Americanized” after Vatican II in 1965, also driven by Asian and Latino immigration. Evangelical churches grew including “fundamentalists”

  7. Family Values – the “fight” between Conservative vs. Liberal ideas Public issues included: family values, abortion, rights of women, acceptance of homosexuality… This led Rev. Jerry Falwell to create a new group called “The Moral Majority” (p.816 inset) Culture Wars Public schools became the battleground for many of these issues. Supreme Court ruled in “Romer v. Evans” Conservative issue had to do with preventing homosexuals from gaining “special rights” in society.

  8. Which of the following changes in American • society do you consider to be the most • significant AND why? • Topics: • The Feminist Critique • Women’s Rights and Public Policy • Coming Out • Churches in Change • Culture Wars

  9. Create a branching diagram over your • assigned topic by brainstorming the • important information and details from • the reading. • Topics: • The Feminist Critique • Women’s Rights and Public Policy • Coming Out • Churches in Change • Culture Wars • Women and Work in American • Offices (p. 814 inset).

  10. 1997-women made up 47% labor force, and 70% of all office jobs. By 1990s, women filled majority of office jobs. This was a change from earlier times when men dominated office jobs. Women and Work in American Cities p.814 Change began as early as the Civil War. 1900 a division of labor existed, however, there was a hierarchy 1880s-new technology increased need for office workers 1870s gained acceptability 1860s concern over the moral implications of “MIXING” men/women in an office.

  11. Prompt: • Write a paragraph response to the following prompt: “Discuss on major change experienced by the United States during the 1980s- 1990s.”

  12. 811-817 • Draw inferences about • the United States during • the 1980s-90s. • Create branching diagrams • to organize information.

  13. What trends and conclusions can we inferabout the 1980s-90s from the data sets? • The number of married women with children in white-collar jobs increased, however, they still lagged behind with regard to wages. • Poverty levels steadily decreased throughout the 1960s, however, began increasing in the late 1970s • Family income steadily increased until 1970 and then began decreasing in the 1980s as unemployment starts to rise. • The number of women in workforce increases until 1990, when it begins to decrease which may be explained by the reemergence of more conservative social ideas/values.
