  2. Aims of the lesson By the end of this lesson you will • Understand how people reacted to the policies of Hoover’s government • Evaluate the importance of the 1932 presidential election and why Roosevelt won

  3. Background • 1932 – election year • Hoover and the Republicans were very unpopular • He said that things were getting better when they clearly were not • Laisses faire was not working • Hoover tried to sort out the depression in order to save his own skin

  4. Rising resentment • Introduced tax cuts to get people spending – poor saw them as favouring the rich • The RFC and other things he introduced seen as being too little too late • By 1932 unemployment was 7 million • Tariffs increased – led to exports dropping from $2341m in 1929 to $784m by 1932 • People did not give credit for anything that he did

  5. Protest and the bonus army • Protest by 1932 – police involved and often led to violence • Police saw unemployed as criminals – many turned to crime to make ends meet • 1924 – US government gave a payment to those men who had fought in WW1 • Got $50 immediately and the rest to be paid in 1945

  6. The bonus army • Many due a bonus were nit by the depression and living in Hoovervilles • May 32 – many went to Washington to ask for their money at once • Became known as the bonus army and set up a Hoover Ville opposite the White House • Hoover called the bonus army “a rabble”

  7. Reaction to the bonus army • Hoover said that the bonus’ would not be paid in 1932 – House of Representatives votes to pay the bonus army • The Senate supported the President – offered the BA loans to go home • 5000 accepted – the other 10 000 stayed • 28th July – ordered police to clear the bonus army – sent the army in – 4 marchers killed and 1000 injured

The 1932 Presidential Election • Hoover’s handling of the bonus army made him more unpopular • Booed during his re-election campaign • Democratic opponent was Franklin D Roosevelt (FDR) who promised a “New Deal” for the American people • FDR won 42 out of the 48 states and became president in March 1933
