This is OA #3

  4. What to include in a speech story • Size of audience • Location of speech • Reason for speech • Highlights of speech, including good quotes • Reaction of the audience, especially at dramatic points during the speech

  5. What editors look for • Who said what to whom, when and where? • Don’t include everything that was said • Lead usually follows the order of who said what, unless what was said is more important • What is the most important point of speech; you need a thesis; avoid these words: • Commented on • Discussed • Spoke about • Talked on • Talked about • First full sentence quote should be in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th paragraph; no later • See-saw back and forth between paraphrases and quotes after your lead

  6. Outside Assignment #3 • Next week Tuesday, you will attend the opening session of University College Day—take notes and put together a story about the speech • Next Thursday no class; holiday

  7. Tuesday’s agenda • Attend University College Day opening speech in Martin Hall beginning at 9:25 a.m.
