  1. Power point by; Sarah Magnaye The Sleeping Gypsy By: Henri Rousseau Media: Oils on canvas Date: 1897 Asymmetrical

  2. Description • -The artwork I chose was The Sleeping Gypsy, by Henri Rousseau. • -The name of this artwork helps me learn about how gypys don’t really have a to sleep in, because they usually go from town to town entertaining people. They usually sleep where ever they want to. • -The subjects in this artwork I see is a fantastical depiction of a lion musing over a sleeping woman on a moonlit night. • - When I look at the design, a few quantities I see it has a few warm colors, and mostly cool colors. I also see a geometric shape, such as the sun (circle) .

  3. Analysis • The focal point of the artwork is the lion musing over the gypsy/ the head of the lion and the gypsy. • The colors balance out, because the artwork contains both warm and cool colors help it have a calm rhythm/movement. • The mood that the artwork • -The proportion of the things in the artwork are balanced out, because the size of the lion and gypsy are bigger than the sun, because the sun is so far away. • This artwork looks ideal, because it represents an idea not a thing. • The gypsy has pattern in her dress, and a irregular pattern in its mane. • The artwork doesn’t have a lot of movement. It’s vivid, and calm. • - The variety of the artwork, is mostly the shadowing of the artwork.

  4. Interpretation • There is symbolism in the artwork. A wandering gypsy who lies with her jar beside her, gets overcome by fatigue in a deep sleep. A lion chances to pass by, and picks up her scent , but surprisingly it doesn’t eat or harm her. There is a moonlight effect, it is very poetic. The scene is set in a completely arid desert. The gypsy is dressed in oriental costume. • The artist wanted the viewer or audience to feel vivid. He also wanted the audience to see how the lion picks up her scent, but doesn’t devour her. He also wanted the audience to appreciate how the artwork is very poetic. • This artwork reminds me of my home country when I use to wear traditional dresses. • This artwork relates to diversity, by people wearing traditional dresses. This artwork is foreign. This artwork is also related to social studies when students learn about deserts.

  5. Judgment • The painting has served as an inspiration for poetry and music, makes me feel that the artwork is successful. • People would judge Henri Rousseau’s painting The Sleeping Gypsy, by its beauty, skill, meaning, andby how unique it is. • The artwork The Sleeping Gypsy is unique by its use of imagery, and its meaning. • - I don’t think Henri Rousseau should improve anything about the artwork. It’s very unique, and it’s successful just the way it is.
