A New Government • After gaining independence from Spain, Mexicocreated a new gov’t & constitution. • The main issue of this consti. was whether the states should have more power or whether the national government have should have more power. • Eventually the Mexican gov’t created the Mexican Constitution of 1824 • Lorenzo de Zavala helped write this document This principle of government is called “federalism.”

The Constitution of 1824 The Consti. of 1824 included the following terms: • The local gov’t would have more control over laws concerning their states • The states of Coahuila and Texas were combined to make one Mexican state Based on what you know so far about what Anglo-Americans liked, would this constitution be fair or unfair? Explain why! How would you illustrate these terms?

Other principles were added that were similar to the principles in the US Constitution. (like 3-branches of govt.) Based on what you know now would Anglo-Americans think this constitution would be fair or unfair? Explain why! Would Mexican leaders think this constitution is fair or unfair? Explain why!

POV Activity: Constitution of 1824 You are either an American Empresario, a Mexican Leader or an African-American Slave Read about a your assigned personality on the work sheet and write in the correct box how the Constitution of 1824 makes you feel. Share your info and then fill out the other boxes on your own. Your must be a good listener!

  15. What’s worth fighting for? • Two more documents the Anglo settlers had to deal with was the Colonization law of 1825 and the Decree of April 6, 1830. • Compare the Colonization Law of 1825 to the Decree of April 6, 1830 and find out how they are alike and different.
