  2. Introduction • Mozilla Thunderbird is a full-featured email standalone application which is safe, fast, and easy. The purpose of this application is to provide consumers with the ability to send and receive emails as well as having newsgroups and address books. Setting up your email account should be done at the beginning of using Thunderbird. Creating an email account and adding UMBC’s directory to Thunderbird should be used when you need to send an email to someone.

  3. Requirements for Windows Operating Systems • Windows 98 • Windows 98SE • Windows ME • Windows NT 4.0 • Windows 2000 • Windows XP Minimum Hardware • Pentium 233 MHz (Recommended: Pentium 500MHz or greater) • 64 MB RAM (Recommended: 128 MB RAM or greater) • 52 MB hard drive space

  4. Requirements for Mac Operating Systems • Mac OS X 10.2.x and later Minimum Hardware • Macintosh computer with an Intel x86 or PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor • 128 MB RAM (Recommended: 256 MB RAM or greater) • 200 MB hard drive space

Requirements for Linux Software Requirements • Linux kernel - 2.2.14 with the following libraries or packages minimums: • glibc 2.3.2 • gtk+2.0 • XFree86-3.3.6 • fontconfig (also known as xft) • libstdc++5 • Thunderbird has been tested on Linux Fedora Core 4 Minimum Hardware • Intel Pentium II or AMD K6-III+ 233 MHz CPU (Recommended: 500MHz or greater) • 64 MB RAM (Recommended: 128 MB RAM or greater) • 52 MB hard drive space

  6. Procedures for Setting up a UMBC email account in Thunderbird From the Tools menu, click on Account Settings.

  7. Locate and click on the Add Account button.

  8. Make sure the radio button next to Email Account is highlighted, and click Next

  9. In the Your Name textbox, enter the name you would like to be displayed in emails sent to others. In the Email Address textbox, enter your UMBC email address. (username@umbc.edu). Click Next.

  10. Highlight the radio button next to IMAP. For the Incoming Server, enter “imap.umbc.edu”. For the Outgoing Server, enter “smtp.umbc.edu”. Click Next.

  11. Make sure both the Incoming User name and Outgoing User Name are the same as your UMBC user name and click Next. Make sure your Account Name is the same as your UMBC email address, then click Next. Click Finish.
