  1. Pathways to Specialization in Malaysia

  2. Graduation!! =) Foundation (aka Housemanship aka *H/O) for 2 Years During the wait for an offer from MOH, you can or District Hospital (Primary care, *M/O) 2 years SLAB (Skim Latihan Bumiputera) Take MRCP exam part 1 Apply (buat permohonan) during 2nd year of housemanship. If pass, join the MRCP programme Specialization Under MOH (Ministry of Health) Masters Programme (MMED) Registrar / Subspecialty training Attach to University Postgraduate Programme *H/O –house officer M/O – medical officer Junior Specialist!!

  3. SLAB You can skip posting at district hospital because entry into MMED can be as fast as one year after housemanship (possibly) save 1-2 years MMED 4 year programme 1 yr basic surgery + exam, part 1 2 yrs rotation + exam, part 2 1 year work as registrar (6 mths in general medicine + 6 mths in a subspecialty of your choice) Present research in Part 3 exam The competing pool for training in subspecialty as registrar is only within the university No years saved (2 yrs H/O + 2 yrs M/O) Post Graduate Specialization Programmes in Malaysia • MRCP • less training in all the gen. med. subspecialties and more training focused on specific subspecialty of your choice • less wholesome than MMED but faster (possibly save 1-2 yrs) • but after passing MRCP exam, you will need to do 18 months training as registrar for accreditation • and, you will have to queue up for places for subspecialty training • the competing pool is whole Malaysia (harder to get a place)

  4. Meantime possibly

  5. MMED vs MRCP

  6. SLAB = Skim latihan bumiputera • Adjustable geographical places • Can apply during 2nd foundation year • Application into MMED could be completed as early as 1 year (possibly) post foundation • You have to work then • Higher INITIAL pay rise • After 10 years in fact – you will get higher pay rise • Similar to those who do research (and apply for associate professorship – not yet attained) • Work = Teaching (20%) • But 80% of time is given into bedside clinical teaching • Could possibly research to get higher status (professorship) and earn more money • MOH = Ministry of health • Subspecialty  specific organ system

  7. MMED = Masters in medicine (specifically internal medicine) • Registrar = A Specialist Registrar or SpR is a doctor in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (similar in Malaysia) who is receiving advanced training in a specialist field of medicine in order eventually to become a consultant (Masters). In surgery, also referred to as Higher Surgical Trainee or HST. • MRCP = Purely examination • Must wait 18 months after graduation • 6 months clinical practice (foundation) • Needs to involve emergency medical patients • To work for UK (GMC approved) • 1 year if wish to work elsewhere • Can apply during 2nd foundation year • Useful to cut short even foundation practice • Go straight into SUBspecialty training • Obviously ur not well rounded then and lacking in practiceApplication into MMED could be completed as early as 1 year (possibly) post foundation

  8. Concept of specialist vs masters PHD • Specialist • clinical degree • Masters – academic research degree • Note: Malaysia only offers MASTERS • Prerequisite for specialist TRAINING in Malaysia • OR MRCP • PHD ranked highest • Academic RESEARCH degree • Nice to have but not necessary as a specialist (most don’t) • May not be recognised in malaysia

  9. PHD in HK

  10. PHD in HK Note: For more information on doing PhD in the Czech Republic, you can ask your respective University Study Departments. So far, Malaysia has not accreditate PhD from Czech Universities. But, PhD may be useful for those working overseas.
