Background Information • The Great Lakes are often remembered by their first initials, which is where H.O.M.E.S comes from. • The Great Lakes are one of the youngest natural features of the North American continent. • Covers more than 94,000 square miles. • Hold an estimated 6 quadrillion gallons of water, about 1/5 of the world’s fresh surface water supply and 9/10 of the U.S. supply.
