  3. 1920 - 1939 • Kraft introduces Macaroni and Cheese. • Cooking from scratch begins to decline • Red meat, vegetable intake increase • Heart disease on the rise • Surpasses TB as leading cause of death • Slim becomes preferred body type

  4. 1940 - 1959 • First McDonald’s Hamburgers opens • Home cooking begins to decline • Research links heart disease with high saturated fats • Fewer than 25 percent of Americans have healthy diets

  5. 1960 - 1979 • Whole grains, Vitamin C gain popularity • Soft drink consumption increases • Exceeds milk consumption by 1980 • Federal committee finds unhealthy diets • Too high in fats, sugars, and meat • Too low in grains, fruits, and vegetables

  6. 1980 - 1999 • Low-fat snacks flood grocery stores • Americans still become more overweight • Omega-3 fats found heart-healthy • Found in fish, flaxseed • Fish consumption increases • Dairy and egg intakes decrease
