  1. Techniques Assignment: Constructive Controversy By : Alexander Belgorodskii, Richard Bowen, Goce B., George Bessiris

What is it? • It is a group exercise/assignment • Each group is given the assignment of developing and advocating for the best case possible of the pro position and negative position of a situation • Allowed to use information from case or personal experience • Engage in developing skills in the battle of intellectual disagreement; • Learn how to utilize controversies.

  3. When is it Best Used ? • To produce better solutions by using consensus, debate, or individual effort • To involve other people with different perspectives and views • To give everyone an equal opportunity to argue for own alternatives and express own opinions • To provide cooperative learning (creating social and emotional independence and involvement) instead of instructional procedure (affecting only head and hand)

  4. How Does it Work? • One pair of students in each group is given the assignment of developing and advocating for the best case possible of the pro position • Another pair of students does the same for the con position • Persuasive arguments for their position are created • Rebuttals from the two groups • After consulting with their partners and arguing their positions, the pairs reverse perspectives • Both teams come up with one integrated solution

Advantages • Able to brain storm ideas and express them openly • Allows individuals freedom of speech regarding the issue (no interruptions) • Expertise and insights are shared amongst individuals • Participants become strongly motivated to produce solutions and work on reasoning skills while being able to retain new knowledge gained • Generate high quality, creative solutions (when collaborating ideas)

  6. Disadvantages • Become unsure of own opinion when confronted with differences in opinions and rationales • Might turn destructive if an individual is not able to listen to other peoples opinions • Individuals might start criticizing each other rather than the ideas
