  1. Marine Cybernetics Marine Cybernetics’ primary business is independent testing of advanced control systems to secure safe and reliable operation of ships and offshore installations. This results in significant savings for yards, ship owners, contractors and oil companies. Offers consultancy services covering design reviews and simulation studies of advanced control systems. Established in 2002. Main Office Located in Trondheim, Norway. 56 employees in Trondheim and growing. Foreign offices established in Houston and Rio de Janeiro. Delivered more than 70 projects

  2. PETROMAKS: kick-starting the project Supports Norwegian R&D projects through funding FundedMarineCyberneticsresearchonHIL testing of Offshore Drilling Systems The primary objective Introduce independent HIL testing as a new industry standard for independent testing of software in offshore drilling systems Three Brazilian interns was a part of the project Obtained project results: Drilling-HIL, as developed in this R&D project, is today a commercial service offered by Marine Cybernetics

  3. Third Party Verification in NASAHIL testing • Example: NASA Independent Verification & Validation (IV&V) Facility • The NASA IV&V Program was founded after the Challenger accident. • According to NASA, Independent Verification & Validation requires • Technical independence • Managerial independence • Financial independence • Software IV&V is performed in parallel with the software design • The NASA IV&V Program mitigates risks early in software design

  4. HIL testing – virtual test environment Early, thorough, safe and efficient testing Normal operation Commanded throttle R$50 000 Cruise controller I/O Speed measurement HIL testing Commanded throttle Cruise controller I/O Simulated speed measurement

  5. HIL Testing of Drilling Systems Draw-works Crown mounted compensator Top drive Roughneck Handling machinery for the drill string Catwalk machine Pipe shute Pipe racker Fingerboard Anti collision / zone management Sophisticated computer controlled systems that rely on software to function properly Combination of components delivered from several suppliers Must run and work together as an integrated system in order to Maintain safety Achieve the desired operational performance

  8. The Current Situation Brazil Enormous investments in the oil and gas sector Not enough capacity to perform all operations Currently unable to fill the need for educated labour Local content has a high political priority Norway Oilrelated SMB industry goes international 120+ norwegian companies in Brazil Not enough norwegians with Brazil specific knowledge Has defined Brazil as a target market

  9. What we did Established internship contract in cooperation with Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) Three Brazilian interns from UFSC Wrote their bachelor thesis on topics relevant to marine cybernetics while working in the company The interns are operational and ready to perform HIL testing and simulator development all over the world Two started working for Marine Cybernetics One continued her master studies at NTNU while working for Marine Cybernetics Three new interns from UFRJ, USP and UFSC are in the pipeline

  10. Challenges

  11. Feedback From the Interns Professional challenges Competitive salary level Good working conditions Sacha: ” I really enjoy working in Norway, especially as just graduated, they respect and have confidence in you, which is a bit different from Brazil. I really like to live here and I intend to live here for several years.” César Carvalho Marcela Cicilio Sacha Boff

  12. Who Should be Involved in the Program?
