  2. What is Self-Reliance? • Not relying on others • Having enough resources / money • Being able to pay for oneself • Not being a burden to others

  3. Why Self-Reliance? • Lessen burden on government • Lessen burden on taxpayers • Promote responsibility • More focus on the truly needy

  5. Medisave • Part of Central Provident Fund (CPF) contributions • Money is channeled monthly to Medisave • For an adult 35 & below, 20% of CPF goes to Medisave • For more detailed information: • http://bit.ly/hPolr (CPF Website)

  6. Medisave • Used to pay hospital bills • Use of Medisave extended after feedback • Chemotherapy • High blood pressure medication • Assisting in conception • HIV anti-retroviral drugs

  9. Medisave • With Medisave, healthcare spending is reduced • S’poreans can pay for their own bills • Healthcare becomes a shared responsibility • Govt. burden is reduced • No need to raise taxes

  10. Medishield • Medisave unable to cover long-term treatment • National healthcare insurance scheme • Premiums paid with Medisave • Claims made from Medishield cover large bills • Medishield covers long-term hospitalisation and treatments like dialysis

  12. Encouraging Self-Reliance In conclusion, Encouraging self-reliance allows people to pay for their own healthcare and lessen the burden on the government and taxpayers. This allows government to better manage healthcare by directing resources to areas where it is more needed and not have to pour more money than is necessary
