  1. Welcome Jacksonville High School Seniors Beginning of the Year Senior Orientation Meeting

  2. Future Ready Core Requirements • 4 Credits English (English I, II, III, & IV) • 4 Credits Math (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and a 4th math with Algebra II as a prerequisite such as AFM, Pre-Calc, or AP Calc) • 3 Credits Science Earth/Environmental, Biology, and either Chemistry or Physical Science

  3. Future Ready Core Requirements • 3 Credits Social Studies Civics/Economics, US History, World History • 1 Credit PE/Health • 2 Elective Credits of any combination from either CTE courses, Arts Ed., World Language • 4 Elective Credits (four course concentration such as IB, Performing Arts, Career Tech, PE, etc,) • If you are planning on attending a 4 year university it is suggested you take 2 years foreign language. • Total of 21 credit hours

  4. Graduation Project: 4 Parts • Research Paper • Product • Portfolio • Presentation

  5. SAT Registration (Scholastic Assessment Tests) • Most four year colleges require that you take the SAT. You are highly encouraged to take it. • The SAT has three components: Critical Reasoning, Math, and Writing • Tests are given at Jacksonville High School • School Code: 341950 • Register at www.collegeboard.com • Mrs. Cox is the SAT Contact at JHS

  6. SAT Scholarship Qualifications for SAT Scholarship 1. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on the weighted scale at the end of first semester of the senior year. 2. Earn a composite score of 1100 or higher on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) 3. Earn a composite score of 23 or higher on the ACT 4. Earn a College Preparatory Diploma a. 4 English b. 4 Mathematics c. 3 Science d. 3 Social Studies e. 2 Foreign Language

To Receive $1000 SAT Scholarship Complete 100 hours at approved agencies in Onslow County No hours completed during the school day No more than 4 hours allowed on a school day No more than 8 hours on a non-school day No hours may be completed on the military base or air station 20 hours must be completed during the senior year

  8. To Receive the $500 SAT Scholarship All previous rules apply, except: 75 total required Up to 35 school or church hours Students should keep copies of hours and they are encouraged to do more than required.

  9. SAT Test Dates • Oct. 5, 2013 • Nov. 2, 2013 • Dec. 7, 2013 • Jan. 25, 2014 • Mar. 8, 2014 • May 3, 2014 • Jun. 7, 2014

  10. ACT Test Dates • The ACT test differs from the SAT in that it measures what the student has learned while in school. The SAT is more of an aptitude test, testing reasoning and verbal abilities. • The ACT has 4 or 5 components: English, Math, Reading, Science, and an Writing Test • School Code: 341950 • Register at ACT.org

  11. Transcript Requests • www.cfnc.org will send instate transcripts to colleges you request within 1 to 2 working days. You will need to apply online through the CFNC website. This is also an excellent resource to find information on career interests, preparing for ACT/SAT, applying for scholarships, and touring colleges/universities to see what programs of study are offered where • For out of state schools you may fill out a transfer request form in the guidance office. You will need to specify if you would like it mailed to the university or if you would like to pick it up at the end of the day. The guidance office will either send the transcript to the college or give you a sealed transcript to include with your application. Many colleges want all items to be enclosed on one envelope.

  12. Financial Aid www.fafsa.ed.gov/ • Colleges award financial aid to students who can demonstrate that they and their parents need help in financing the costs of college. • FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) • Every senior should fill out the FAFSA form after January 1st.

  13. Financial Aid • Once the college you apply to receives the FAFSA application they can determine if you can receive monetary assistance. • FAFSA forms are usually available in December.

  14. Net Price Calculators • Most colleges now have Net Price Calculators on their websites • You can enter income and asset data • Based on one – year income • Gives you a baseline dollar amount • Contact Financial Aid office after you use the calculator to ask what the school can do for you as far as financial aid

  15. Selective Service Registration • All young men living in the U.S. with very few exceptions are required to register with Selective Service within 30 days of turning 18. Registration is federal law. It is also required to stay eligible for many federal and state benefits. • Senior males who are 18 can register online at http://www.sss.gov

  16. Scholarships • As scholarships open they will be posted on the school website and announced on the intercom. • Available applications will be placed in the Scholarship Cart in the Student Services Department. • Postings will also be placed on the bulletin board outside of guidance.

  17. Letters of Recommendations(Resumes) • Some colleges require recommendation letters. • Decide now who can best represent you to your college of choice. • Ask the recommender to write a reference letter for you. • Present the recommender with a resume • STAFF MEMBERS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO WRITE RECOMMENDATION LETTERS AND HAVE THE RIGHT TO DECLINE WRITING A REFERENCE.

  19. Gentle Reminders • Most colleges look for reasons to admit students, not reject them. • Good academic preparation, extracurricular activities, and good behavior will help you get into the college that’s right for you. • Tell them the best things about yourself including academic achievements, skills, talents, and life experiences that make you special.

  22. Coastal Carolina Community College You will take a placement test at Coastal. You may present SAT/ACT scores. If the scores are high enough they will replace the placement test. You will need to present a high school transcript with your application. Coastal has open enrollment. Counseling office at CCCC open until 7:30 p.m.

  24. Military • Check out military booths in the cafeteria • Set up appointments to talk with the military liaison • Check out the advantages and opportunities of the different branches of service
