  1. My Culture Cajun By: Austin Broussard

  2. Food • Cajuns are known for our spicy hot food like gumbo, my favorite, and jambalaya. Jambalaya Gumbo

  3. Music “Let the Good Times Roll” Cajun music is different from any other. Cajun music is upbeat and the focus is on the accordion.

  4. Language • My family speaks English and a little French, while my grandparents speak both languages. Our older generations spoke mainly Cajun French.

  5. Clothing • I wear regular name brands like Under Amour, Hurley, and Hollister.

  6. Holidays • Cajuns celebrate Mardi Gras which means Fat Tuesday. It’s a day full of parades, music, and festivities to start off our Lenten season.

  7. Housing • We live in a single story house with a Country French style. It is filled with bits and pieces of our Louisiana life style.

  8. Art • Paul Rodrique’s Blue Dog paintings are famous to our Cajun culture.

  9. Literature • My sister, who lives in Plano, is trying to get her children's books published. The books are about an alligator named Chompston living in a Cajun swamp with his friends.

  10. Religion • The majority of Cajuns, including my family are Catholic.

  11. Ethic/Racial Background • My family is Cajun-French and American.

  12. Daily life/Routine • I go to school, eat supper, watch TV, and go to bed.

  13. Family History • My ancestors came from the south of France. • The Broussard families of Louisiana trace their ancestry to two Acadian brothers, Joseph and Alexandre, also called Beausoleil, who arrived in New Orleans in 1765. • In Louisiana, we learned how to live off the land by fishing and hunting.

  14. Government • Unlike all other states, Louisiana has Parishes instead of counties. There is one President for each Parish.

  15. Family Traditions • Every Christmas Eve, my family reads “The Cajun Night Before Christmas.”
