  1. On the Road with Fractions By students

  2. As Bill starts on his trip, he has a problem.

  3. A mechanic uses fractions to change a tire. He needed a ¾ inch ratchet. • A ¾ ratchet is greater than ½. • ¾ • 1/2=2/4

  4. What’s Ahead! Bill stopped at a bakery for a piece of cake. The baker was having trouble deciding on how much cinnamon to use in his cinnamon rolls. Bill solved the problem and was once again on the road.

  5. The baker wanted to add an extra ½ cup of cinnamon to his recipe that called for 1 ¾ cups. She wasn’t sure how much she needed.

  6. First the baker had to look at the two fractions. They had different denominators. Then she had to change 1 3/4 to 7/4. Next make 1/2 to 2/4 . Add 7/4 to 2/4. answer: 9/4 Reduce 9/4 by dividing. 9 divided by 4 = 2 1/4 Bill was hungry so he bought two doughnuts and left.

  7. Bill went to the next town. There was a football game going on. He watched the first quarter (1/4) He went to get a hotdog . Then he watched the next quarter (1/4). He needed to know how much of the game was left.

  8. Football ¼ + 1/4 = 2/4 Take 1 whole game - 4/4 -2/4= 2/4 2/4= ½ Two quarters or one half of the game is left.

  9. Bill leaves the game and goes to the movies. A carpenter is working on the steps. He needs the 2 steps to be 21 inches high. One step is 10 ¾ inches high. He asks Bill to help him with the other step.

  10. 21- 10 ¾ = Change 21 inches to 20 and 4/4 4/4 - 10 ¾= subtract 4/4-3/4 10 1/4

  11. Bill fell down the steps and had to go to his hotel. He had traveled 35 1/3 miles and had to go 9 ½ more. He decided he had traveled too many miles in one day. 35 1/3 + 9 1/2=

  12. 35 1/3 + 9 ½ = He found equal fractions. 1/3 = 2/6 ½= 3/6 Then he added the whole problem. 35 2/6 + 9 3/6 = 44 5/6 The next day he just enjoyed the beach without doing any fractions.
