Chapter 16 Highlights • new economic and social directions. • A close investigation of foreign control of the economy is achieved. • The central issues of energy and environment are highlighted as well. • Canada’s new social movements are discussed through an account of the struggle of Canadian women and aboriginal peoples to take their rightful place in Canadian society.

  3. Economic Nationalist • Def- a person who believes that his or her country should have as much control as possible over the economy • HS- The federal Liberal government under Trudeau introduced policies to limit foreign investment in the Canadian economy

  4. Committee for an Independent Canada (CIC) • Def- a committee of several prominent Canadians formed in 1971 to demand limits on foreign ownership of Canadian businesses • HS- Trudeau’s policies reduced foreign ownership from 36% in 1970 to 26% by 1981 • Why is it important to limit foreign investment? • Why might it create economic problems? • What are some benefits?

  5. Foreign Investment Review Agency (FIRA) • Def-approved any takeover of a Canadian Company or a new foreign-owned business • HS- the governments purpose was to ensure that foreign investment would have significant benefits for Canada, but the action was deeply resented by the Americans

  6. National Energy Program (NEP) • Def- to establish 50% Canadian ownership of the Canadian oil and gas industry by 1990 and make Canada self-sufficient in energy • HS-resented by American companies as being hostile to the US, but 84 % of Canadian in 1981 approved of the goals of the NEP

  7. American Influence • Step Individually read p. 397-403 (10 min) • Step 2-With your desk/elbow partner using your worksheet, students decide on the four most important arguments for and against American investment. Students must be able to defend their choices • Step 3 - Then, complete the rest of the worksheet to analyze important points concerning FIRA, the energy crisis and NEP
