  6. Lies, thefts and corruption. (Applying the 8th & 9th Commandment in the marketplace). August 26, 2012.

  7. What is corruption? “In practical terms, corruption is therefore an abuse of entrusted power for personal gains and benefits. It manifests itself in various forms of manipulation to favor a particular person, group of persons or company at the expense of other people. It comes in different shapes and sizes and is generic, pervading all manner and spheres of society.” NECF statement, “Church and Corruption”- roundtable discussion with church leaders, 29/10/10.

  9. To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but even their minds and conscience are defiled. They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work. 1 Tim 1:15-16

  10. Corruption means not loving your neighbor. • Giving and taking bribes has far larger negative consequences than the apparent positive favors you receive. • When we are involved in corruption we compartmentalize our working lives from our church lives.

So much has been stolen that only a meager are left for running of the police and intelligence services. Corruption blinds us to submission to authorities. • We are called to submit to every governing authority (Romans 13:1-9). • It is the corporate responsibility of every believer to uphold justice for our neighbor and ourselves. (Just because most people don’t follow the law does not mean we should do the same).

Corruption destroys our role as salt and light of the world. “If we are to be a holy people and have every aspect of our lives submitted to God the emphasis then shifts to the other six days of the week when we are called upon to demonstrate the kingdom’s power in often corrupt and idolatrous surroundings”. The people of God are the “salt and light” of the earth. There is no point in gathering on Sunday to complain about the sad state of our nation’s politics, our economy or our culture.   16. Our work is our worship to God. • We are to glorify God in everything we do (1Cor 10:31). • God is not glorified when your work offering is tainted with corruption.

  17. “ Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice.” Proverbs 16v8 “ Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a rich man whose ways are perverse.” Proverbs 28v6

  18. Church is the “ekklesia” • We are a people “called out” for God’s sovereign purposes. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9

  19. Training to be salt and light in a culture of corruption.

  20. We are called to be content and adaptable despite averse conditions. Greed is the source of most corruption.

  21. Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely-becontent with your pay.” Luke 3:14

  22. I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of BEING CONTENT in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all things through him who gives me strength.   24. Adaptability and competency. • Joseph was put in charge of Potiphar’s household (Exodus 39:2-6). • Joseph was put in charge of the King’s prison (Exodus 39:22). • Joseph was put in charge of Egypt (Exodus 41:41-57).

  25. Competency vs. Corruption. The administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. Daniel 6:4

  27. Aim to prosper for Godly gain, not personal gain. When you are of value to your company, you can influence it’s culture of corruption.

  28. Where we have opportunity, impact our Corporate culture and the ethos of the workplace to minimize corruption, and to encourage policies that reflect Kingdom values.

  29. Leverage your influence. • Joseph was put in charge of Potiphar’s household (Genesis39:2-6). • Joseph was put in charge of the King’s prison (Genesis39:22). • Joseph was put in charge of Egypt (Genesis41:41-57). • God caused Joseph to prosper to save the Israelites from starvation.

  35. Deal shrewdly with the world. Declare your Christian values early. Position yourself to be away from corruption as much as possible. Understand how your local business culture operates.
