  2. Purpose of program: The purpose of the MIDD program is to help diversify the national economy by stimulating dairy development. Innovation and capacity development play key roles in this.

  3. Background • Following National Dairy Forum Nov’10 and number of studies by WUR and SNV-BOAM program • Program funded bythe Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ethiopia • Implemented by Wageningen UR, SNV Ethiopia • Pre-program phase 2011 • Main phase 2012-2016

  4. Objectives of the program 2011-2016 Goal: To develop dairy value chains that sustainably contribute to income generation and food security. Objectives: • To facilitate the development of dairy value chains in four areas (milk sheds) to increase the efficiency of chain operations. • To help create an enabling environment for dairy value chain development at regional and national level. • To develop the capacity of chain operators and chain enablers to contribute to sustainable value chains, with particular focus on entrepreneurship, leadership, innovation, and cooperation.

  5. Phases of the program • Pre-phase 2011- Preparatory phase, studies and pilots • Pre-phase: 1-6-2011 till 1-3-2012 • Implementation: Wageningen UR (Livestock Research, CDI and LEI) and SNV • Implementation phase: 2012-2016

Key approaches • Value chain approachin 4 areas • Integrated approach; production, collection, processing, marketing • 4 regions: 1st selection: Selale, Adama-Asella, Awassa-Shashemene, Bahir-Dar; coordinated with AGP and LGP • Appropriate mix of smallholder/large scale focus and public-private partnership focus • Innovation & learning at local and national level Strengthen linkages value chain - government - knowledge institutes • Milk shed innovation network - address issues at value chain level • National innovation network – address issues at national/institutional level • Supporting innovations by means of innovation fund • Emphasis on Capacity Development

Some activities 2011 • Improvement of enabling environment (national level) • Assessments/studies technical/institutional issues: breeding, feeding, milk quality, dairy business hubs • Pilot farm advisory system for large scale farms • Support for chain coordination: national dairy board • Design of national innovation network • Value chain development in 4 milk sheds • Assessments of value chains in areas • Stakeholder analysis and design of innovation networks

Some activities 2011 (cont.) • Capacity development • Exposure key stakeholders (Netherlands & neighbouring countries) • Identification of needs and approach for capacity development (governmental institution, producers organizations, business developmente service providers) • Develop links with universities

Some activities 2011 (cont)_ • Preparation of program for main phase • M&E system for learning • Identification of local partners including frame works for cooperation (knowledge institutions, governmental institutions, ngo’s etc.) • Coordination with AGP and other donors (USAID, CIDA etc) and Dutch supported programs

Outputs for 2011 • Four dairy areas (milk sheds) for program implementation agreed upon • Situation analysis of selected milk sheds • Innovation networks for national and milk shed levels designed • Studies on key sector level innovation issues • Capacity development needs assessed of key dairy value chain operators and enablers • Program & partners for next four years
