  1. 4th IAEA Research Coordination Meeting on CRP on Natural Circulation Phenomena, Modelling and Reliability of Passive Safety Systems that Utilize Natural CirculationVienna, 10-13 September 2007 ENEA recent advances in the Passive Systems Reliability R&D Luciano Burgazzi ENEA, Bologna, Italy

  2. Recent publications • Failure Mode and Effect Analysis Application for The Safety and Reliability Analysis of a Thermal-hydraulic Passive System L. BurgazziNuclear Technology, Vol. 156, November 2006 Component electrical and mechanical malfunctions relevant to the system probability of failure • Addressing the Uncertainties Related to Passive System Reliability L. BurgazziProgress in Nuclear Energy, Vol. 49, January 2007 Effort in assigning probability distributions to the parameters deemed critical for the system performance • Thermal–hydraulic Passive System Reliability-based Design Approach L. BurgazziReliability Engineering and System Safety, Vol. 92, September 2007 Natural circulation system design, within a risk-informed framework based on demand-capacity interference model

  3. Activities in progress • ENEA involvement in the RAPHAEL EU project, related to High Temperature Reactors • Application of RMPS to assess the HTR Cavity Cooling System, in conjunction with CEA and JRC Petten • More elements with respect to the natural convection as in RMPS project • Radiation • Conduction • Assessment ofrelated additional modes of failure • Assessment of a set of relevant parameters (e.g. emissivity, conductivity) • Transient to be analyzed • Depressurized conduction cool down (loss of forced cooling with depressurization) • Failure criterion upon maximum allowableconcretetemperature • ENEA expression ofinterest for a new Coordinated Research Project
