  2. The Rise…. Nirvana was an American rock band that was formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987. Made up of: singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic. Nirvana went through a succession of drummers, the longest-lasting being Dave Grohl, who joined in 1990.

  3. The Rise… The band established itself as part of the Seattle music scene, releasing its first album Bleach for the independent record label Sub Pop in 1989. After signing to major label DGC Records, Nirvana found unexpected success with "Smells Like Teen Spirit", the band's lead single from its second album Nevermind (1991) had a series of successful albums and singles throughout 1991-94 including: Bleach, Nevermind,"All Apologies“, "Come as You Are”, “Lithium“, “Rape Me“, and "You Know You're Right“(an unfinished demo released in 2002)

  4. The Fall… Cobain was uncomfortable with the attention and placed his focus on the band's music, believing the band's message and artistic vision to have been misinterpreted by the public. He was constantly challenging his audience. Cobain one said in an interview, "Famous is the last thing I wanted to be." He also struggled to reconcile the massive success of Nirvana to his underground roots. He felt persecuted by the media. He began to harbour resentments for people who claimed to be fans of the band yet refused to acknowledge, or misinterpreted, the band's social and political views.

  5. The Fall… In early 1994, the band embarked on a European tour. In Rome, on the morning of March 4, Courtney Love (Cobain’s wife) found Cobain unconscious in their hotel room and he was rushed to the hospital. He had reacted to a combination of prescription drugs and alcohol. The rest of the tour was canceled, including a planned leg in the UK. In the ensuing weeks, Cobain's heroin addiction resurfaced. On Friday, April 8, 1994, a week after voluntarily leaving rehab, Cobain was found dead of a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head at his Seattle home. Nirvana's brief run ended following the death of Cobain.

  6. The Impact… Nirvana entered into the mainstream, bringing along with it a subgenre of alternative rock called grunge (generally characterized by heavily distorted electric guitars, contrasting song dynamics, and apathetic or angst-filled lyrics). As Nirvana's frontman, Kurt Cobain found himself referred to in the media as the "spokesman of a generation," with Nirvana being considered the "flagship band" of Generation X.

  7. The Impact… Nevermind not only popularized grunge, but also established "the cultural and commercial viability of alternative rock in general.“ opening a lot of doors fro bands to come. Listeners had an extreme responce to the band. Nirvana also contributed to the extreme growth in popularity of the Seattle music scene.
