If you are unable to follow these three rules your privileges will be taken away!

  2. Unit 7 Lesson 4: Ocean Currents • Agenda: • Find the differences between surface currents and deep-ocean currents. • Discuss how convection, winds, air, and earth’s rotation cause currents. • Interpret a diagram of major ocean currents and prevailing winds.

  5. Coriolis Effect The Earth’s rotation affects air masses and wind patterns. These patterns then affect the flow of the ocean currents. Surface currents moving from the equator toward the poles tend to veer toward the right, while currents moving from the poles toward the equator veer toward the left.

  6. What is THERMOHALINE CIRCULATION??? Deep-sea currents that occur because of differences between the salinity and temperature characteristics of water masses. **Decreasing temperature and increasing salinity both increase water’s density. When the density increases, the water can sink.

  8. Down-welling VS. Upwelling Down-welling is the movement of sinking water. Upwelling is the upward movement of nutrient-rich, cold, deep water that replaces warmer surface waters that are moved by wind. When down-welling and upwelling work in a cycle, it can create????
