  1. COMMENCEMENT AT UMKC What follows is a brief look at what to expect during the School of Education Commencement at UMKC.

  2. Picking up your name (announcing) card in Pierson Auditorium You will pick up your name card from tables set at the east end of Pierson Auditorium. Photo by Brad Martens

  3. In May, announcing cards will all be white. At the December ceremony cards are color-coded by Academic Unit. Education is light blue. ANNOUNCING CARDS IN PIERSON AUDITORIUM Photo by Brad Martens

  4. Gather with friends in Pierson Auditorium the day of Commencement.Pick up your name card. Note the poles with degrees. Find the pole with your degree and number to line up by 9:45 a.m.

  5. Preparing to March to Swinney Rec Center Line up behind your degree and number sign. Hold onto your name card and prepare to listen to instructions.

  6. Faculty are robing in U-Center 106 while students robe in Pierson Auditorium.

  7. Faculty who are not serving as marshals line up in the hallway between Pierson and U-Center 238 preparing to march.

  8. The bagpiper warms up outside Pierson Auditorium preparing to lead the Processional

  9. The Procession comes out of the University Center and parades between the buildings.

  10. The impressive Processional to Swinney Rec Center.

  11. On the way to Graduation Ceremony.

  12. The bagpiper leads in the student group and plays until all students have reached their seats.

  14. Students march into Swinney Recreation Center behind flag bearers for their degree.

  15. Students are seated as instructed by faculty marshals.

  16. The Brass Ensemble from the Conservatory of Music and Dance plays while the faculty and platform party enter Swinney Rec Center.

  17. Here come the faculty!!

  18. The stage is set for Commencement.

  19. The faculty are in place on stage.

  20. Everyone is in place, let the ceremony begin!

  21. A vocalist sings the National Anthem to begin the ceremony.

  22. Dean Wanda Blanchett and others will speak throughout the ceremony. Listen for instructions on when to rise and when to come forward to the stage.

  23. The red arrow marks the trail for doctoral hooders to follow to the stage. Doctoral students go forward to the RAMP.

  24. Starting with the Master’s degree candidates, graduates will be directed to walk away from the stage, circle behind the bleachers and approach the ramp to the stage. Follow directions please.

  25. RECOGNITION CEREMONY Approach the stage by walking up the ramp. Hand your card to Dr. Miller at the podium closest to the ramp.

  27. Dean will be here After handing Assistant Dean Timmerman your card, greet the Dean and others and cross the stage until you reach the stairs on the left.

  28. Photo taken here You will be posed for a photograph just after you come down the stairs. After smiling for the camera return to your seat through the CENTER aisle.

  29. Remember. . . . Approach stage from ramp After handing your name card to Dr. Miller, you will walk towards the dean to receive a diploma (cover). Cross the stage. You will be directed to the stage. Hand your card to Assistant Dean Timmerman, walk to Dean Blanchett and others to receive congratulations, cross stage, stop for a photo, then return to your seat via the center aisle.

  30. Dean Blanchett will hand you a diploma (cover) and congratulate you. Several others will greet you as you cross the stage. Once you exit the stage you will be posed for a photograph. You then should return to your seat via the center aisle. Faculty marshals will help guide you.

  31. After everyone has crossed the stage and returned to their seat you will be told to move your tassels!

  32. Speakers during the ceremony You will hear several people speak during the ceremony.

  33. You will be directed out of your seats at the conclusion of the ceremony. You will exit Swinney Rec Center to greet your family and friends.
