  1. Batting and Kicking 2010 OVC Clinic Steve Hazle

  2. Definitions: • Batting – Intentionally striking the ball or Intentionally changing its direction with the hands or arms (2-10-3) • Kicking – Intentionally striking the ball with the knee, lower leg or foot. When in question, the ball is accidentally touched rather than kicked. (2-15-1)

  3. Legal Batting (9-4-1) • Pass in flight – any direction - if eligible to touch it (except 9-4-2) • Block scrimmage kick (behind NZ) anywhere in field of play or EZ • Backward – anywhere between the goal lines (could still be illegal touching)

  4. Illegal Batting Loose ball forward (toward opponent’s goal) (9-4-1c) Loose ball any direction in the EZ Backward pass in flight batted forward by passing team (9-4-2) Ball in player possession batted forward by a player of that team (9-4-3)

  5. Legal Kicking (2-15) Free kick to start 1st and 3rd quarter by drop kick or place kick Free kick following score by drop kick, place kick or punt (only if following safety) Offense, before COP, to kick from behind NZ by use of punt, drop kick or place kick

  6. Illegal Kicks (6-3-10b, c, d) • Return kick – dead ball – 5 yards from spot • Kicker’s entire body beyond NZ – dead ball – 5 yards and LOD from previous spot • Device or material to mark spot of scrimmage place kick or elevate the ball – live ball foul – 5 yards from previous spot

  7. Illegally Kicking ball • Loose ball anywhere on field (9-4-4) • Live ball foul

  8. Effect on Impetus • Kicks add new impetus • Bats add new impetus to grounded loose ball

  9. Universal Truths • We need a flag when: • Anybody kicks grounded loose ball in any direction (flag spot) • Anybody bats grounded loose ball forward (toward opponents goal) anywhere between goal lines (flag spot) • Anybody bats grounded loose ball any direction in the end zone (flag in end zone)

  10. Universal Truths • Unless during pass in flight or scrimmage kick behind NZ, if anybody bats ball toward opponent’s goal, we need a flag on the spot. • Also need flag if offense bats backward pass in flight behind NZ toward opponent’s goal • Unless defense attempting to block scrimmage kick behind NZ, or a pass in flight, if anybody bats the ball in any direction in the EZ, we need a flag
