  2. How have Past Circumstances in Canada’s History Influenced Interpretations of Numbered Treaties? Past circumstances in Canada’s history have led to the way the First Nations and Canada’s government have interpreted Treaties. When writing Treaties, the First Nations could not communicate with Canada’s government properly as they spoke different languages, interpreters had to be used to make the Treaties. By using interpreters, some key parts of Treaties were left out or misinterpreted.

Canada’s government believed that Treaties would only last for a little while, and the First Nations would assimilate. The government believed it would not take very long for the First Nations to start acting like European people. However, this did not happen, and the Treaties are still in effect today.

By signing Treaties, First Nations believed they were preserving their culture and identities. Due to the lack of respect they received in the past, First Nations viewed Treaties as a way to keep their traditions.

Canada viewed the Treaties with the First Nations as a way for them to gain land and build a railway. The First Nations were on the most desirable land, and the Canadian government viewed the treaties as a way to gain the land. The First Nations thought the Treaties would protect the land they were on from being taken away from them.
