  2. The Building The Building was designed by Gregory Johnson and his architectural firm Shreve, Lamb and Harmon. The designs were finished within 2 weeks. The building was actually designed from the top to bottom.

  3. The Building (cont.) Excavation began on January 22, 1930 and construction began on March 17th. The project took about 3,400 workers, mostly European immigrants. The building was officially opened on May 1st ,1931. Building this was a part of a competition for the title of New York’s tallest building.

  4. The Opening The building’s opening happened with the Great Depression and most of its office space went unused. Because of this, the building didn’t become profitable until 1950. In 1951, The Empire State Building was sold to Roger L. Stevens and his buisness partners for 51 million dolars, it cost 40 million to build.

  5. Crash. At 9:40 A.M on Saturday, July 28th, 1945, a B-25 Mitchell bomber plane crashed into the north side of the Empire State Building. 14 people were killed in the incident. Elevator Operator Betty Lou Oliver survived a plunge of 75 stories in an elevator, still holding the Guiness World Record for longest survived elevator plunge.

  7. Suicides Since it’s building, over 30 people have commited suicide on this building. The first suicide on this building was before the completion, by a worker who was laid off. In 1979, Elvita Adams jumped from the 86th floor, only to be blown back into the 85th floor with nothing but a broken hip.

  8. Height. • The Empire State Building reaches up to 1,250 ft (that’s just up to the 102nd floor), added to the pinnacle (the pointy top), making the total height of 1,453 ft. • It has 73 elevators and 1,860 steps from the street level to the 102nd floor.

For example, In 1995, when Windows 95 released its 300 million dollar campaign, The Empire State Building was lit with red, yellow, blue, and green.
