  15. Heat Pumps Application examples

  16. Large-scale heat pump applications

  17. New markets? • Where is the use of heat pumps constantly increasing? • … on top of industrial refrigeration • Industrial process such as drying processes (tiles, plaster, paper,..) • Campus sites, Universities, Hospitals • IT server sites • Sites with simultaneous demand for cooling and heating. • Who to work with • … on top of regular customers • Consultants • Cooperation with energy solutions providers. • What are the major the risks/challenges of using a heat pump? • … and when using a traditional boiler plant? • Controls, Controls • Heating systems have less focus on stable temperatures.

  18. Example : Hospital • Heatpumps coveringbothcooling and heating. • Coolingdemand (AC / coldstorage / freezers) = heatsource • Basicprinciple for operation: • Coolingdemandwillallways cover total heatingdemand – ensured by energyefficientbuilding design and buffer tank for variations. • Installation: • 3 pcstwo-stage heatpumps (SAB 157 HP / SMC 116L) • Coolingcapacity 3 x 1,5 MW – heatingcapacity 3 x 2 MW • All existingcooling installations converted to watercooledcondensers forconnection to common system (previousaircooled) • Buffertank for heatstorage – 3000 cum • Dry coolers for excess heat in summer and freecooling in winter

  19. Example : District Heating Ammonia heatpump using a ChillPAC 108S Cooling: 550 kW usingwater from boiler gas cooled from 14 to 9 deg. C. Heating: 666 kW, water from 35 to 45 deg. C With yearly operating app. 2.500 hours, the heatpump deliver 550 MWh to the districtheatingconsumers. Optimized operation of gas boilerusing heatpump Increaseefficiency of powerplant / COP of heatpump = 5 Distribution via buffertank (heat storage 250 MW) Operation from October to April (peakseason). In summertime heatingwith a system burningwooden chips.

  20. Example : Horticulture Ammonia heatpump using 4 HeatPAC 108S Cooling: 4 x 790 kW usingwater from boiler gas or solar panel. Heating: 4 x 930 kW, water from 35 to 60 deg. With yearly operating app. 5.000 hours, the heatpump deliver a significant part of the heating for the horticulture plant. Burner gas cooler Heatpump in plant withkettles, motorheat and solarpanels Increase of supplytemperature to 80 deg. C using motorheat Efficiency of plant couldbeincreasedwith a buffertank to store heat from solarpanel and motors, in order to run the heatpump when the electrcity rates arelowest. Solar panel Motor cooling HeatPAC108S

  21. Example : F & B - Dairy

  22. Example : F & B - Dairy Heat pump with cascade cooler Heat recovery on oil circuit and de-superheat

  23. Heat Pumps Tips & Tricks

  24. Selling Heat Pumps solutions • It is about selling Energy Saving, not a product • Selling price should match the expected R.O.I. • Selling price not according to cost. : YLCS Heat pump 7>60°C = 1300kW and at 25/60°C = 2000kW same unit but 50% more capacity ! • We are selling heating be careful when presenting the company • We are targeting sometimes customers who do not have cooling needs

  25. Selling Heat Pumps solutions • Questions not to forget to raise to the customer : • Does he knows about his site : • the Energy mix ? • the Global Energy costs ? • the Energy use/load profile ? • Any pressure / constraint regarding energy saving beside operation cost, i.e. regulations, image, CO²,.. • What the expected ROI ? • Availability of the heating source ? • Any thoughts about refrigerants ?
