  3. What is place value? Place value is the value of a digit as determined by its position in a number Example: Place Value Chart By looking at the place value chart, you can see that the number 4 is in the hundreds place.

  4. Understanding a Place Value Chart Reading and writing whole numbers can best be explained by using a place value chart. In our number system the placement of each digit in a numeral is important. Each place has a certain value. You read a place value chart from left to right.

  5. What each place represents… Thousands = 1, 000 = Hundreds 100 = Tens 10 = Ones 1 oRemembero The value of a digit depends on its place in the numeral

  6. In the number 3,498, the 9 is in the tens place. If we were asked how many tens are in the number 3,498, we would say 9. For Example: You can also think of it as… 9 Tens = 90

  11. Numbers Place Mystery Value Read the clues for the three mystery numbers below. Record your answers on the recording sheet I have handed out to you. Mystery Number 2 The mystery number has 0 in the ones place, a 0 in the tens place, and a 5 in the hundreds place. What is it? Mystery Number 1 The mystery number has a 5 in the tens place, a 1 in the ones place, and a 4 in the hundreds place. What is it? Mystery Number 3 The mystery number has a 7, in the ones place, a 6 in the thousands place, a 0 in the tens place, and a 1 in the hundreds place. What is it?
