  2. 399 black men • Macon County, Alabama • Told they had bad blood • Surgeon General Approved of study • PHS (Public Health Service) advocated for it • PHS told the men they were being treated, but they weren’t • Fred Gray, lawyer, found out and sued the organizations responsible for the study.

  3. Primary Syphilis • Small sores called Chancres appear on body; often painless and some unnoticeable lasts from 10-90 days.

  4. Secondary Syphilis • Rashes on palms and feet develop; usually 2-10 weeks after primary.

  5. Latent Syphilis • Has quiet symptoms; lasts 2-30 years.

  6. Tertiary Syphilis • Most don’t develop tertiary, but if they do it can damage the heart, eyes, brain, liver, nervous system, bones, and joints.

  7. 1990 • President Bill Clinton apologized to the remaining survivors (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1A-YP24QwA) 24:54 – 26:06 • Claimed it was “Deeply, Profoundly, Morally wrong.” • A survey showed 10% of blacks thought American Government made AIDs to exterminate blacks. 20% couldn’t rule out that possibility
