  2. Joint pT+H2O+O3 Microwindows 3 sets of 10 microwindows are being provided, each with different maximum widths: 1cm-1 2cm-1 and 3cm-1 Previous Meeting: • 1cm-1 MWs completed with LUTs & IGs • 2cm-1 MWscompleted, no LUTs or IGs yet • 3cm-1 MWsstill being selected (1st 5 found so far) Current Status: • All MWs selected, LUTs and IGs generated Page 2

  22. Joint pT+H2O+O3 Microwindows Conclusion • Joint microwindows for pT + H2O + O3 significantly more ‘efficient’ in terms of accuracy per measurement or per microwindow than independent retrieval microwindows. • 2cm-1 and 3cm-1 max width microwindows very similar, but 1cm-1 microwindows rather different. • Note, however, that these joint microwindows have been selected ignoring horizontal gradient errors (ie for GEOFIT-type retrieval). 23. Special Modes (part of WP1400/2100) Page 23

  24. Special Modes • Previously … • Selected Occupation Matrices for Key Species for Special Modes using existing MW datasets • Selected Occupation Matrices for Additional Species for Nominal Mode using dedicated MW datasets Results in Survey of Existing Algorithms for the Selection of Auxiliary Data (Aug 2003) Last Meeting (Nov 2004) • Selected Occupation Matrices for Additional Species for Special Modes using nominal mode 0.025cm-1 MW datasets Page 24

  25. Special Modes Additional Species • PM2 Conclusions • Special Modes at normal spectral resolution are generally at higher vertical sampling than nominal mode resulting in worse retrievals of minor species unless retrieval grid is reduced • Special Modes at lower spectral resolution (S4,S6) may result in improved retrievals of minor species through improved S/N (particularly cross-section molecules) – not yet tested This Meeting: • test the second conclusion (for S6 mode) Page 25

  26. Special Modes Page 26

  27. S6 Special Mode Key Features 0.1cm-1 resolution instead of 0.025cm-1 • Expect factor 2 improvement in S/N 2km vertical spacing instead of 3km • Expect factor √(2/3) reduction in S/N (neglecting FOV) Overall, not clear whether these will be better or worse accuracy than nominal mode retrievals. Page 27

  28. S6 Special Mode Microwindow Selection Select dedicated microwindows for 6 key species and 7 major additional species: ClONO2, COF2, CFC-11, CFC-12, HCFC-22, OCS and SF6 (OCS replaces NH3 from earlier part of study – see presentation from Alastair Burgess) Plots show comparison with nominal mode, and 0.1cm-1 microwindows selected for nominal mode spacing (‘LR’ – key species only) Page 28
