  3. What is dissection?What are we going to dissect? Dissection: to cut something into parts and carefully examine or study it. We will be dissecting a rattomorrow Rats are mammals, and their internal structures are similar to those of humans Rats can be male or female

  4. Lab Safety during dissection • Always follow all instructions given by Ms. Schlansky. • Always wear all safety equipment. • Use dissection equipment only for its intended purpose. ( NO playing around will be allowed!) • Be careful! Watch carefully when you are walking around, and do not leave your lab station if you don’t have to. • Do not carry dissection equipment (like pins, scissors, scalpels) around the room if it is not necessary.

  5. Clean Up Procedures At the end of each day: -Place the brainin a ziploc bag with your group member’s names on it. -Wash all dissecting equipment and return it to the front of the room. -Wash the dissecting pan and dry it and return it to the front of the room. -Clean your lab area and make sure the table is clean and dry. - Entire lab DUE: at the end of class

  6. Dissection Equipment • Scalpel-used for making shallow cuts • Probes-used for moving organs and tissues around (poking) • Forceps-used for grabbing parts of rat (skin, or removing fat bodies) • Scissors-used for making deep cuts
